We've got another new addition in our entryway, besides the map wall. There is a narrow spot right next to our front door that is perfect for a small console table -- and while it has been in this spot for awhile, it finally got a makeover.
I picked this table out for $12 at a consignment shop. It had a faux
marble top with stains and let's just say my mom and Erica were
skeptical. When I brought it home, Mike was not a fan either.
The "painted" Aztec pattern was actually completed with a chalk marker {affiliate link}. To start, I found some inspiration online for the Aztec design. I used this print from Fancy That Design House.
It made sense to start in the middle, so using a ruler I measured it out and marked the center with a dot. From that point, I started drawing. If it was a small line, like that diamond, I would just freehand it. If the lines were longer, I would use a straight edge for my guide.
One of the things I really like about this chalk marker {affiliate link} is how solid the coverage is when you color in a shape. It's not as opaque as paint; but much more opaque than a regular piece of chalk.
I wanted this design to feel hand painted and casual so I didn't worry with painter's tape to make perfect lines. The chalk marker {affiliate link} gives it that hand drawn look, too.
To protect the surface, I added several light coats of my favorite clear spray paint {affiliate link}. I stopped adding coats once I could scratch my finger across it without causing any marks {a very technical method, right?}.
This table is a great landing spot for items that we need to take with us when we leave the house. I don't keep much on it because we use it often.
Underneath the table we keep a basket of shoes for the little guy.
You might recognize some of the wall art from this post about decorating with items that are meaningful to your family. Each of the pieces above our $12 console table are special to us.
The Aztec trend isn't something I'd want an entire room decorated in; but I like this small dose of it. Have you been into the Aztec trend? Do you have a not-so-pretty piece of furniture that could just be waiting for a makeover?
